Inspired by the regularly trending hashtag #TestItTuesday across social media promoting the testing of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, Fireplace Products has made it even easier for people to protect themselves from the potentially lethal effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Here’s how we’re helping, and how you can help yourself:
It begins with headaches and nausea. By the time you are vomiting you’re feeling dizzy and breathless. Was that chicken you ate at lunch undercooked? Perhaps you’re coming down with the flu, you’ll wonder. In fact you’re suffering carbon monoxide poisoning and your life is in great danger. The cruel truth is you should never have ended up in this situation in the first place.
In the UK more than 200 people are hospitalised as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, and around 40 people die each year. Carbon monoxide poisoning over a long period can lead to paralysis, brain damage and even death. Caused by the incomplete burning of fuel, including wood, coal, petrol, oil, gas and LPG, fireplace owners are the most at risk and need to be alert.
Damaged and blocked chimneys and flues force the noxious fumes into your room, so it is important to check your chimney regularly and keep it clean. When in use, it is important to burn only the correct fuel and properly maintain your fire. When burning gas, be sure to watch for lazy yellow or orange flames and increased condensation around the windows in the room.
However the safest way to protect you and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning is to get a carbon monoxide alarm and test it regularly. In October 2011 changes to UK building regulations came into effect which mean all new wood burning or solid fuel appliances must have a carbon monoxide alarm installed alongside. To make things easier – and safer- for our customers, we include a carbon monoxide alarm free with every solid fuel fire we sell – which is a bit more useful than a complimentary poker, we’re sure you’ll agree.
However if you already have a fire but need a carbon monoxide alarm we can help. You can save a further 10% (on top of 50% discount already in place!) on the Kidde 5CO carbon monoxide alarm. Simply enter the ‘TESTITTUESDAY’ voucher code at checkout. This offer expires on 00.01am 2 September.
If your alarm sounds, or you notice the aforementioned symptoms, open all the windows and doors, turn off the appliance and get out of the house as quickly as you can.
